David Em

American Artist 1952-

David Em is a pioneer in the use of computers in art.


Em is credited with several art-related firsts, including the creation of the first navigable virtual worlds in 1977. He created an articulated digital insect in 1976. A book of his early work, The Art of David Em, published by Harry N. Abrams, is the first monograph on a digital artist. His art has been exhibited in museums, including the Centre Pompidou, the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art, the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Seibu Museum, Tokyo.

David Em was born in Los Angeles and grew up in South America. He studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and film directing at the American Film Institute.

Em produced his early art work in research laboratories, including Xerox Research PARC (1975), Information International Incorporated (1976), NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he was Artist in Residence from 1977 to 1984, the California Institute of Technology (1985 to 1988), and Apple Computer (1991). Em has worked independently since the early nineties.
