David Shafer

David J. Shafer is a Georgia politician. He currently serves in the State Senate, representing portions of Fulton County and Gwinnett County in the suburbs north of Atlanta. Shafer is a Republican. He served as executive director of the Georgia Republican Party in the early 1990s, managed the gubernatorial campaign of Republican businessman Guy Millner in 1994 and was himself the Republican nominee for Secretary of State in 1996. Shafer ran for State Chairman of the Georgia Republican Party in 2001, losing a three way race to Christian conservative activist Ralph Reed. Shafer was first elected to the State Senate in a special election on February 12, 2002. He was reelected in the 2002, 2004 and 2006 general elections. He is closely allied with Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle. Shafer is a graduate of the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.
