Daxing District (Simplified Chinese: 大兴区; Traditional Chinese: 大興區; Hanyu Pinyin: Dàxīng Qū) is situated at the suburb of south Beijing. Daxing District was upgraded from a county to a district with the approval from the State Council on April 30, 2001. Covering an area of 1,012 square kilometers,Daxing District is divided into nine towns and 18 townships with a population of 671,444 (2000 Census). A flat plain district it is one of the satellite cities of Beijing. Panggezhuang in Daxing is famous for its watermelons.
