There have been widespread calls for the 2011 national census to include extra tick boxes so people can identify their ethnic group in category A as Welsh, English[2] or Cornish [3],[4](at present the tick boxes only include British, Irish or any other). Although people could record their individual nationalities in the United Kingdom Census 2001, there was no provision for a tick box so that people could clearly identify as part of these ethnic groups. By not having this option in the survey there have been some claims of racial discrimination against these groups. There was some confusion over the new 2001 census codes and the fact that you had to first deny being British, thus elicting a negative response first before a positive identicication as in the case of the Welsh, English and Cornish groups. In addition many people were unaware of the new Census 2001 codes and some were unsure of the legality of them. [5]
