New Study "Arab Population In the West Bank and Gaza: The Million Person Gap" suggests the Palestine Central Bureau of Statistics seriously overestimated the growth of the Palestinian population and has double-counted certain populations when it made its original predictions in 1997. All further estimates were based on the 1997 predictions it:
- double-counted the Jerusalem Arabs - thus adding 210,000
- assumed immigration into the territories, while there has in fact been steady migration - thus adding 310,000
- counted residents living abroad - thus adding 325,000
- overestimated the birth rate
Since the publication of the study, the Palestine Central Bureau of Statistics has revised its population estimates down by 750,000 as a result of immigration exaggerations. [5]
