Ethnic group questions in the census There were calls before and after the 2001 census for a more straightforward way of recording ethnic group as English, Scottish, Welsh[4], Cornish[5], or other national or ethnic group. Although people could record their individual nationalities in the United Kingdom Census 2001, there was no provision for a tick box so that people could identify as part of these groups while at the same time indicating British identity. A new question on national identity was included in the 2007 Census Test in preparation for the 2011 census.[6]
