Amuro Deserts is the seventeenth episode[1] of Mobile Suit Gundam.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

White Base continues its journey through the night, as Amuro takes the information they got from the Zaku and puts it into Gundam's databanks. Mirai looks in on the room where Kozzun is being interrogated. However, he refuses to give up the location of M'Quve's mines, not believing that the young Bright is an officer.

Ramba examines the new Zakus sent to replace the ones lost in the desert. Hamon asks why he took this mission, and Ramba tells her that once he's avenged Garma's death, he'll receive a two rank promotion, gaining safety for his men and a life of luxury for her.

Using a few items he had on his person, Kozzun escapes from his cell. After passing Sayla, he asks her if she wants to come too, assuming she's a Zeon. Sayla instead begins crying for help. On the bridge, the crew is under attack from an unknown assailant, and Amuro and Kai leave in the Guntank, angering Bright who wants him to take Gundam instead. Sayla and Ryu go off in search of Kozzun, who has now contacted Ramba Rall, conveying the battle capabilities of White Base and its mobile suits. Sayla finds him, but, after a short scuffle, he escapes.

Amuro and Hayato begin firing on the Zeon base that attacked them, as Amuro comments on how they can take it down with Guntank, and don't need to always resort to Gundam. Ramba Ral has begun approaching the battle, and is soon detected by White Base. He heads out with his Gouf accompanied by two Zakus.

Kozzun makes it to the airlock, and goes enters it, locking the door behind him. He exits the ship using a jetpack, but a crew member fires a bazooka at the door, sending Kozzun sprawling in a big explosion. A horrified Sayla returns to her post on the bridge.

Ramba gets hold of Kai and the Guncannon with his heat rod, and begins surging electricity through it. Gundam manages to come in just in time, and push him back. A shot from White Base's beam cannons damages the Gouf, and Ramba pulls back his forces.

Upon Amuro's return, he is reprimanded for not following his orders to launch out in Gundam. Amuro begins to nod off in the hangar as he thinks over the whole situation. Bright and Mirai come in, not realizing he is nearby, and contemplate Bright's idea of replacing Amuro as pilot of Gundam. Amuro hears this whole discussion, and stands up, alerting them to his presence. He merely stands there, finally running off.

Soon after, Amuro walks through the base in plainclothes. Fraw questions him, and he tells her he's leaving, as he is no longer needed. On the bridge, Bright is told that Gundam is launching. Fraw tells him that it's Amuro, but all he can do is watch as Amuro and Gundam disappear into the night.
