Dexterity is a term referring primarily to the ability of a person to “gracefully” coordinate their movements. It specifically refers to adroitness in using the hands. In this context, dexterity is a motor skill. The term can also refer to intelligence and “mental dexterity.”

The word's origin is Greek; "dex-" is the root of the word "δεξυς" meaning skillfull and "right", as opposed to left, not correct. Then it became "dexter" in Latin, meaning right (as in direction). The latin word for left is "sinister".

Dexterity is a primary attribute of the Dungeons & Dragons fictional characters, and was later adapted to be used as an attribute of characters in many video games, namely role-playing games such as Final Fantasy VII and the Bard's Tale series. Often, in many RPG systems, Dexterity encompasses both hand-eye coordination as well as physical agility. However, in systems that separate the two, dexterity generally encompasses coordination and fine movement with the hands, while agility usually governs 'whole-body' activities such as running, dodging, dancing, and other similar acts.
