Diplomatic Immunity is a 2002 science fiction novel by Lois McMaster Bujold. It was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 2003.

The novel follows Miles Vorkosigan as he is heading home from his honeymoon and is directed to Graf Station in Quaddiespace to resolve a diplomatic crisis.

Miles soon finds out that a convoy of merchant ships and their Navy escorts are prevented from leaving the station. As he investigates, Miles discovers a murder scene or a possible deserter.

  1. Blood is found in airlock.
  2. Shore leave cancelled.
  3. Officer on shore leave is romantically involved with a native Quaddie dancer. When MPs arrive at the residence to recover the officer, fight breaks out.
  4. Station police arrest MPs.
  5. Escort fleet admiral sends in assault force to rescue MP detainees.
  6. Assault force captured & docked merchant ships locked down and not allowed to depart. Passengers are disembarked and kept at hotel under house arrest.

At this point Miles arrives and investigates the above events. With the help of his wife and an informer and old acquaintance, Miles puzzles out the cause of the events. One of the passengers is smuggling a cargo important enough to start an interstellar war, while another is seeking vengeance on the smuggler.

Genetic manipulation as the source of political division between groups of humans.
