Doane Perry began playing the piano at age seven and continued until age eleven. When Doane had heard about the Beatles he decided to take up drums because of what he describes as "the possibility, however unlikely that might have been, of young girls chasing me down the street if I took up the drums."[1] By the time he was 14, Doanne began working with his own band on weekends, and continued to do so until he graduated high school at the age of 17.

By the time Doane was 18, he turned professional while simultaneously attempting to attend college. This led to a serious conflict, finally resolved when he opted to pursue music full time. He began gaining a wider musical background, consisting of mostly music from New York, which included genres such as rock, pop, jazz, orchestral, dance and folk. He has worked as a session musician with many artists including Lou Reed, Todd Rundgren, Gary Brooker, Fairport Convention and Dweezil Zappa.

In 1984 Perry joined Jethro Tull as a drummer to replace Gerry Conway. He is the second member of Jethro Tull to have been born in the United States; (the first was drummer Mark Craney). He continues to tour with the band today and has played on the following studio albums: Crest of a Knave, Rock Island, Catfish Rising, Roots to Branches , J-Tull Dot Com and The Jethro Tull Christmas Album.

Doane Perry has used a wide variety of equipment over the years. He will use different drum kits depending on several factors, such as whether he is performing live or recording in the studio. On recent Tull tours and records, he has primarily been using Premier Artist Series maple drums, but will occasionally use birch Genistas or maple Signia Series drums.
