The Dominica Freedom Party is a conservative political party in Dominica. At the last elections of May 5, 2005 the party lost all of its seats in the House of Assembly, the first time it had had no seats in the Assembly since 1975. In the previous elections of January 31, 2000, the party won 13.6% of popular votes and 2 out of 21 elected members of parliament. The party joined a government coalition with the Dominica Labour Party. The DFP was the ruling party under former Prime Minister Dame Mary Eugenia Charles. She was leader of the party until 1995, when she was succeeded by Brian Alleyne. Since 1996 Charles Savarin is the leader of the party. Since 2000, the party has continued to weaken, relying on its accommodation agreement with the Dominica Labour Party for its remaining influence. In the last elections of May 5, 2005 the party lost these two seats, but the Dominica Labour Party, continuing to desire the support of Savarin, appointed him to the Senate and as foreign minnister, so the Freedom Party still does have some representation in the government. Many inside the party criticize Savarin's leadership for his positive attitude towards its formal rival the Labour Party, but several moves to remove him have not been successful.
