The name for the song is believed to have been from a few of the band's members watching the 1978 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs between the New York Rangers and the Buffalo Sabres. During the game, Rangers goaltender John Davidson took a hard slapshot to the mask and was shaken up by the play.

While Davidson shook it off, Rangers' announcers Jim Gordon and Bill Chadwick talked over an over about how Davidson probably suffered from "double vision" after taking the slapshot. *Source - [1]

The song was also used in an episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force when The Mooninites acquired a belt that would perform its command as long as it was a Foreigner song. "Double Vision" caused someone to have just that. Other self-explanatory powers used were "Hot Blooded," "Cold As Ice," and "Dirty White Boy." The song "Jukebox Hero" was also referenced in the same episode.
