Dutch Dooley (Ed O'Neill) agrees to drive his girlfriend's twelve-year-old son Doyle (Ethan Embry) home for Thanksgiving, hoping that the trip will allow the two of them to develop a relationship and grow closer as a family. When Dutch arrives at Doyle's boarding school in Georgia, he discovers that Doyle is a stuck-up know-it-all who looks down on Dutch because of his blue collar upbringing. As the two of them travel from Georgia to Chicago, they encounter various obstacles that bring them closer together. They eventually arrive home just in time for Thanksgiving dinner.

- The movie had been humourously spoofed on O'Neil's current sitcom at the time, Married...with Children on a couple occasions; when the Bundys are riding a plane to England, both the pilot and Peg tell Al to put his shoes on, to which Al replies "they show Dutch, and they think I stink?" Another reference is seen when Al and Peg are arguing on what movie they want to rent from a video store. A worker puts a copy of Dutch on the rack with a large sticker covering O'Neil's face.
- In the New Dragnet Series (2003) Ed O'Neil and Ethan (randal) Embry once again worked together as Joe Friday and Frank Smith.
