The Eastern Suburbs is a general term which is used to describe the metropolitan area directly to the east and south-east of the Sydney central business district in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Eastern Suburbs can refer to the suburbs within the local government areas of Woollahra, Waverley, Randwick and part of the City of Sydney. The Australian Bureau of Statistics' "Eastern Suburbs Statistical Subdivision" includes only the Woolahra, Waverley and Randwick LGAs.[1]

Demographically, the northern part is mostly Anglo-Saxon but also contains the majority of Sydney's large Jewish community.

The Eastern Suburbs is also known for its extremely affluent areas, such as Vaucluse, Rose Bay, Dover Heights, Double Bay, Point Piper, Woollahra, Watsons Bay and Bellevue Hill.

Travelling south from these suburbs is Bondi Junction a mini-CBD in the east of Sydney, possibly best described as the "capital" of the Eastern Suburbs. South of Bondi Junction the area becomes progressively more middle class as opposed to the areas to the very affluent north of Bondi Junction. Middle class suburbs include Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama, Queens Park, Clovelly, Coogee, Randwick, North Randwick and Kensington.

To the west of Bondi Junction, the 'Inner-City' or 'Inner-East' parts of the Eastern Suburbs, including Centennial Park, Paddington, Darlinghust, Moore Park, Potts Point, Kings Cross and Rushcutters Bay are old extremely working class areas that have become highly gentrified since the 1980s, with the working classes moving out of the area over this time. The landscape in these areas is dominated by overhanging trees and renovated terrace houses.

Further south of all of these areas are the working class areas that are becoming progressively more middle class, of South Coogee, Maroubra, Malabar, Little Bay and La Perouse. These areas are often known as the "South-Eastern Suburbs" of Sydney. The southern parts around Randwick, Kingsford and Maroubra are more middle and working class, still have an Anglo majority but also contain large Greek, Indonesian and Chinese communities.

The region is marked by the predominance of medium and high density housing, especially in the northern parts. The Eastern Suburbs of Sydney extends from the peninsula of South Head at Watsons Bay in the north to La Perouse in the South. The Eastern Suburbs include some of Sydney's well-known beaches such as Bondi Beach and Maroubra Beach.

Recently there has been a significant inlux of Asian immigrants into the Eastern Suburbs. Notably from China and Indonesia. This is due to the large numbers of university students from Asian backgrounds attending UNSW.
