Eddie Dowling

Eddie Dowling (December 11, 1895 - February 18, 1976) was an actor, screenwriter, playwright, producer, songwriter and composer. He was christened Joseph Nelson Goucher as one of almost 20 children born to an Irish and French-Canadian couple in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.
He appeared on stage for many years. His most famous role was the original 'Tom Wingfield' in the original Broadway production of The Glass Menagerie, opposite Laurette Taylor and Julie Haydon. He produced the play's original Chicago production in 1944, and followed it to Broadway.
He was married to the Glasgow, Scotland- born Rachael "Ray" Dooley, a stage performer who specialized in physical comedy. The couple had no children.
He died in Smithfield, Rhode Island, aged 80.
