After marrying at age 16, he divorced a year later. Griffin has one child, Eddie Jr., born in 1986. He first got a taste of comedy when he was a busboy at Stanford and Son's comedy club. He later performed during the open mic night and quickly became recognized.

He has starred in films such as Double Take (2001), Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999), Undercover Brother (2002), Scary Movie 3 (2003), and Norbit (2007). He also starred in the UPN television series Malcolm & Eddie (1996-2000). In addition to his acting credits, he also performed on two tracks from Dr. Dre's 1999 album, 2001. He also has appeared on commercials for Miller Beer's Man Laws. He is considered as well to be a talented standup comic, displaying a flamboyant, cinematic style. Eddie is currently starring alongside Steven Seagal in Once Upon A Time In The Hood a thriller set in New Mexico.

He is number 64 on Comedy Central's list of the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time. Eddie's official fan club website can be found online at: http://www.eddiegriffin.tv. He suffered a heart attack after doing the salsa dance for a taping of his show Malcolm and Eddie.

Eddie crashed a rare Ferrari Enzo while practicing for a charity racing event on March 27, 2007. He seemed to walk away completely unscratched, but the $1.2 million Enzo was damaged beyond repair. [1] The owner of the Ferrari, producer Daniel Sadek, said he had "mixed feelings" about the crash. "I'm glad Eddie came out of the crash okay but my dream car got destroyed," he said, according to the BBC. When asked by reporters his reaction to the crash, Griffin stated, "Undercover Brother's good at karate and all the rest of that, but the Brother can't drive."[2] Some have speculated that the crash was staged, as Sadek's cars have been totaled during filming in the past. Eddie Griffin's publicist released a statement the day after the accident in response to these speculations, "It was not a hoax. Eddie was racing for a charity to promote his upcoming film, "Redline." He got in an accident. He is suffering from neck and shoulder pain as a result of the accident. It was in no way a hoax." [3]
