Edinburgh East Lothian

"Edinburgh East Lothian Shinty Club" are a shinty club who play in the South Division 2 Shinty League. They were formerly known as Musselburgh Camanachd until 2000. They have no second team at present.

Present-day shinty came to East Lothian during the mid 1990's, principally at the instigation of Dougie Hunter (a shinty playing graduate of St Andrews University) and Ian Watt- a fellow resident of Musselburgh. The team played originally as Musselburgh Camanachd Club, in royal blue and white stripes, at Levenhall Links (still home to shinty locally).
The club attracted other shinty players from shinty's heartlands in the western and central highlands (as it still does), and notably encouraged shinty in Haddington amongst the pupils of The Knox Academy under the supervision of Seamus McKinnon. Developing shinty in this area, which is traditionally unassociated with the sport, has always been amongst the club's aims. Recognition of this was achieved when Andrew Dillin was named Under 17 player of the year (south) in 1999.
The club (in all its forms) has played in the South Divisions of the Marine Harvest League and associated cup competitions. After a particularly difficult season in the upper division, Musselburgh found itself in a perilous state- it was at this juncture that the club was reconstituted.
Reforming in 2000 as Edinburgh East Lothian Shinty Club, (to broaden its catchment) the club underwent dramatic redevelopment. Instrumental to many of the reforms was Alasdair Rothe who now implements development policy for The Camanachd Association. EELSC were narrowly pipped to the league title during the two years after reformation- the latter amidst controversy over match cancelations/walk-overs. Successes were also achieved at the St Andrews sixes (1999) and the Inverness sixes Rosedean Shield (2002 & 2004). The club has sporadically contested the Hunter Eccles Trophy against St Andrews University- and would do so again if the trophy were to be located(!).
Many players have graced the ranks of Edinburgh East Lothian, hailing from such shinty communities as Oban, Fort William, Newtonmore, Kingussie, Glenurquhart, Inverness, Strathglass and various Universities. Newcomers from Ireland, Australia, the Netherlands, Canada and South Africa have, however, given the club a somewhat International flavour. The club looks forward to the next phase of shinty, played during the summer months and hopes to add to its membership and successes.
