Home Education in France

Home education or home schooling in France is legal and requires the child to be registered with two authorities, the 'Inspection Academique' and the local mayor (Mairie). An inspection is carried out twice yearly once a child reaches the age of six (it is obligatory from the age of eight) this is normally in French, however can occasionally be in English if the parents request it and the local Inspection Academique is amenable.
The inspection involves written tests in both French and Maths, the first of which is used as a benchmark to check what level the child is. The tests are carried out with the anticipation that the child will progress in ability as s/he ages, thus they are designed to measure development with age, rather than as a comparison to say a school child of a similar age.
There are two main home education organisations in France, these are:
- Choisir D' Instruire Son Enfant (CISE) which literally means "Choosing to Educate our Children"
- Les Enfants d'Abord, literally "Children First"
Les Enfants d'Abord organises week long camps and other events, have regional contacts available to provide support and produce a quarterly newsletter.
