Electoral district of Avon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Avon is an Electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Avon district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Avon, and is said to hold the seat of Avon. As of 1986, the Member for Avon is Max Trenorden who holds the seat for the National Party by a margin of 22.1%. The seat is considered to be a safe National seat.

Avon is rural electorate covering 15,861 km² on the eastern side of the Darling Range. From north to south, main centres include Northam, York, Beverley, Brookton, Pingelly, Boddington, Wandering, Popanyinning, Cuballing and Wickepin.

Avon had traditionally been a Country Party seat until 1974, when following the inclusion of Northam, it was won by that seat's Labor member, Ken McIver. He held the seat until defeated by the National Party's Max Trenorden in 1986. Trenorden continued to increase his majority until 2001 when the arrival of One Nation saw no candidate in the contest win more than a quarter of the vote. Max Trenorden eventually won with the help of Liberal preferences, but suffered a two-party preferred swing of 12%.
