Electoral district of Bassendean
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bassendean is an Electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Bassendean district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Bassendean, and is said to hold the seat of Bassendean. As of 2005, the Member for Bassendean is Martin Whitely who holds the seat for the Labor Party by a margin of 13.7%. The seat in 2009 is expected to be retained by the Labor Party.
Covers suburbs and some rural districts in an area bounded by the Swan River, the Tonkin Highway and Beechboro Road. It covers 84 km² and includes the suburbs of Ashfield, Bassendean, Eden Hill, Kiara, part of Morley, Lockridge, Beechboro, Caversham and West Swan.
Bassendean was created as a new seat for the 1996 election, roughly replacing the abolished electorate of Morley. It recorded a 7.1% swing to Labor in 2001.
