Electoral district of Bunbury
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bunbury is an Electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Bunbury district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Bunbury, and is said to hold the seat of Bunbury. As of 2001, the Member for Bunbury is John Castrilli who holds the seat for the Liberal Party by a margin of 0.4%. The seat in 2009 is expected to be highly contested.
Covers 24 km² in the inner parts of the City of Bunbury, roughly surrounded by Robertson Drive. The electorate includes the port of Bunbury, as well as Bunbury, South Bunbury, East Bunbury and Carey Park.
Bunbury has existed since 1890, and until the city's rapid urban expansion in the 1980s, was generally represented by the conservative parties. Its first member from 1890-1901 was pioneer explorer and the state's first Premier Sir John Forrest. From 28 June 1904–13 February 1911 Bunbury was held by Major-General Hon. Sir Newton James Moore who was premier from 7 May 1906–30 June 1909. Bunbury was held for Labor by Phil Smith between 1983 and 1993. In 2001, Bunbury was the ninth seat Labor needed to win to achieve government, Labor's Tony Dean gaining a 6.8% swing to defeat Cabinet Secretary Ian Osborne.
