Electoral district of Carine
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Carine is an Electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Carine district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Carine, and is said to hold the seat of Carine. As of 1996, the Member for Carine is Katie Hodson-Thomas who holds the seat for the Liberal Party by a margin of 4.7%. The seat in 2009 is expected to be retained by the Liberal Party.
Carine is a northern beachside electorate west of the Mitchell Freeway, generally bounded by Warwick Road in the north and Scarborough Beach Road in the south. Covering 26 km², it includes the suburbs of Waterman, Carine, North Beach, Trigg, Karrinyup, Gwelup and parts of Duncraig, Scarborough, Doubleview and Innaloo.
Carine replaced the abolished seat of Marmion at the 1996 election. It was contested in 1996 by former Wanneroo Inquiry Commissioner Peter Kyle, standing as an Independent and cutting the majority in this normally safe Liberal seat to just 2.2%. The victorious Liberal at that election was Katie Hodson-Thomas, who went on to win easily in 2001 despite an 8.9% swing to Labor. The seat's boundaries changed before the 2005 election to take in large sections of the abolished seat of Innaloo.
