Electoral district of Cottesloe

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cottesloe is an Electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Cottesloe district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Cottesloe, and is said to hold the seat of Cottesloe. As of 1990, the Member for Cottesloe is Colin Barnett who holds the seat for the Liberal Party by a margin of 11.7%. The seat in 2009 is expected to be retained by the Liberal Party.

38 km² on the narrow strip of land between the lower reaches of the Swan River and the Indian Ocean. From south to north, the electorate includes the suburbs of North Fremantle, Mosman Park, Peppermint Grove, Cottesloe, Claremont, Swanbourne, Mt Claremont, Shenton Park and parts of City Beach and Floreat.

Created in 1950, this seat has never left the Liberal fold and has had only three members in the more than five decades of its existence. The first MP for Cottesloe was Ross Hutchinson, who represented the seat until 1977. His successor was Bill Hassell, who served as Liberal Leader in the mid 1980s, losing the 1986 election and retiring in 1990, later serving as state Agent-General in London. On his departure, Colin Barnett was elected at a by-election. The Greens polled 14.3% of the vote in Cottesloe in 2001.
