Electoral district of Fremantle

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fremantle is an Electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Fremantle district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Fremantle, and is said to hold the seat of Fremantle. As of 1990, the Member for Fremantle is Jim McGinty who holds the seat for the Labor Party by a margin of 14.4%.

City of Fremantle and surrounding suburbs, west of Carrington Street and south of the Swan mouth. The electorate also includes Rottnest Island, and in all covers 45 km².

Labor held since 1924. Fremantle was the seat of disgraced former Labor Deputy-Premier, David Parker. He had rolled former member John Troy for pre-selection in 1980, Troy running on a number of occasions since as an Independent. After serving as Deputy-Premier under Peter Dowding, Parker became part of the cleansing Labor tried to undertake to rid itself of the WA Inc stench. He was later convicted for misuse of party funds, though like Brian Burke, his eventual conviction on a relatively small charge seemed to be coloured by disquiet over much larger deals undertaken in the WA Inc era. The Greens usually poll well enough in this seat to force Labor to preferences, winning 17.0% of the primary vote in 2001.
