Electoral district of Girrawheen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Girrawheen is an Electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Girrawheen district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Girrawheen, and is said to hold the seat of Girrawheen. As of 2001, the Member for Girrawheen is Margaret Quirk who holds the seat for the Labor Party by a margin of 23.4%. The entire seat is working-class and very safe Labor.
Girrawheen is a northern suburban seat in Perth, and includes the suburbs of Marangaroo, Alexander Heights, Girrawheen, Koondoola and parts of Balga and Mirrabooka. Until 2005 the seat included Liberal-leaning areas to the west, which were transferred to Balcatta electorate in a redistribution.
The seat at various times has been known as Marangaroo and Balga, and was held from 1988 to 2001 by Ted Cunningham (who died on 2 November 2003), and from 1973 until 1988, it was held (as Balga) by Brian Burke, who served as premier from 1983 to 1988. The 2005 election saw the sitting member being challenged by City of Wanneroo mayor and Burke ally Jon Kelly as an independent - however, he only got 15.4% of the vote.
