Electoral district of Midland

Midland is an electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Midland district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Midland, and is said to hold the seat of Midland. As of 1996, the Member for Midland is Michelle Roberts who holds the seat for the Labor Party by a margin of 13.6%. The seat in 2009 is expected to be retained by the Labor Party.
75 km² electorate based on Guildford and Midland along with suburbs in the lower rises of the Darling Range. Includes the suburbs of Hazelmere, Midvale, Stratton, Jane Brook, Swan View, Bellevue, Greenmount, Koongamia, Helena Valley, Boya and parts of Darlington and Gooseberry Hill.
Midland replaced the old marginal Liberal electorate of Helena in the 1996 redistribution, a Labor majority having been created by the transfer of some of the best Labor voting booths from the electorate of Swan Hills. As a result, the sitting Liberal MP for Helena, Rhonda Parker, moved to contest the seat of Ballajura. Midland was then won by another redistribution refugee in Michelle Roberts, who moved across the city from the abolished electorate of Glendalough. There was a 9.2% swing to Labor in Midland at the 2001 election.
