Electoral district of Murchison-Eyre

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Murchison-Eyre is an Electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Murchison-Eyre district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Murchison-Eyre, and is said to hold the seat of Murchison-Eyre. As of 2001, the Member for Murchison-Eyre is John Bowler who holds the seat for the Labor Party by a margin of 8.1%. The seat in 2009 is expected to be retained by the Labor Party.

The state's largest electorate, covering more than half of the state and stretching all the way from Gascoyne Junction and Newman to Eucla. Other centres include Meekatharra, Mt Magnet, Leinster, Leonora, Southern Cross, Coolgardie, Boulder, Kambalda and Norseman. At 1,232,356 km², it is larger in area than Victoria and South Australia combined. Electoral enrolments have fallen by almost 6% over the past two and a half years.

The new name for the old seat of Eyre. Murchison-Eyre has been used as an electorate name previously, existing between 1968 and 1989 when it was represented by three different Liberal MPs. The last of these, between 1986 and 1989, was Ross Lightfoot, who went on to serve in the Legislative Council and currently in the Senate. The former Labor MP for Eyre between 1989 and 2001 was Julian Grill, a Minister in the Burke and Dowding government, who had also represented much of the district as MP for Yilgarn-Dundas 1977-83 and Esperance-Dundas 1983-89.
