Electoral district of Murdoch

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Murdoch is an Electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Murdoch district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Murdoch, and is said to hold the seat of Murdoch. As of 1996, the Member for Murdoch is Mike Board who holds the seat for the Liberal Party by a margin of 5.9%. The seat in 2009 is expected to be retained by the Liberal Party.

Straddling the Kwinana Freeway south of the Mount Henry Bridge, Murdoch includes the suburbs of Brentwood, Rossmoyne, Bull Creek, Winthrop, Bateman and parts of Booragoon, Mt Pleasant, Kardinya, North Lake and Leeming. The electorate anincludes the main campus of Murdoch University and covers 27 km².

Murdoch was re-created before the 1996 election, having previously existed between 1977 and 1989, when it was represented in Parliament by former Liberal Leader Barry MacKinnon. Between 1989 and 1996, a seat with similar boundaries existed, but was then called Jandakot. MacKinnon retired as member for Jandakot at the 1993 election after losing the Liberal Party leadership to Richard Court.
