Electoral district of Southern River

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Southern River is an Electoral district of Western Australia. As in other districts, the Southern River district elects a single person to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. The elected person is then known as the Member for Southern River, and is said to hold the seat of Southern River. As of [2001]], the Member for Southern River is Paul Andrews who holds the seat for the Labor Party by a margin of 11.8%. The seat in 2009 is expected to be retained by the Labor Party.

South-east suburbs of Perth, including Lynwood, Huntingdale, Southern River and parts of Langford, Thornlie and Gosnells. The electorate includes the Canning Vale industrial area and the fruit and vegetable markets and covers 41 km².

Formed by the redistribution that preceded the 1996 election, Southern River had a narrow Labor majority going into its first election. Contested by sitting Kenwick Labor MP Judy Edwards, she was defeated by the Liberal Party's Monica Holmes. The result was reversed in 2001, as a 4.9% swing to Labor saw Holmes defeated by Labor's Paul Andrews. The most recent redistribution has substantially improved Labor's position.
