Electoral districts of Western Australia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly is elected from 57 single-member electoral districts. These districts are often referred to as electorates or seats. Under current legislation, the Perth metropolitan area is divided into 34 districts, and the remainder of Western Australia into 23 districts.
The Electoral Distribution Act 1947 requires regular review of electoral boundaries, in order to keep the relative size of electorates within certain limits. Electoral boundaries are determined by the Western Australian Electoral Commission. The last electoral redistribution was completed in August 2003; it applied in the state election of 2005, and will apply for the next election unless special circumstances arise. One possible trigger for an early redistribution is the Government's "One Vote, One Value" legislation, which is currently before the High Court of Australia.
