Elementary stream
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Defined by MPEG communication protocol. An elementary stream contains only one kind of data, e.g. audio, video or closed caption. An elementary stream is often referred to as "elementary", "data", "audio", or "video" bitstreams or streams. The format of the elementary stream depends upon the codec or data carried in the stream, but will often carry a common header when turned into a packetized elementary stream.
The contents of an elementary stream is entirely dependent on the type of data carried. Some types (specified by the "stream identifier" in the associated PES packet header) are defined by the MPEG standards, such as audio and video types. Others may be proprietary data, or data defined in other standards such as DVB-SUB.
