The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland (sometimes referred to as Elmo the Grouchland) was the second theatrical feature-length film based on the characters of the children's television series Sesame Street (after 1985's Follow That Bird). It co-starred Mandy Patinkin and Vanessa L. Williams. This film was produced by Columbia Pictures and Jim Henson Pictures, and originally released to movie theatres in 1999.
The film received moderately positive reviews, did poorly theatrically, despite the popularity of Sesame Street and the Elmo character. The film faced stiff competition from mostly adult-oriented films, for at the time of its release, it was the only family film playing in most theaters. In total, The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland made a total of $11,634,458 (on a $17,000,000 budget)during its two-month theatrical run. Similarly, its companion piece Muppets From Space, released the same year, suffered the same fate and performed poorly theatrically as well.

Elmo the fuzzy little red monster wakes up one morning to stick together with his fuzzy blue blanket. When Elmo accidentally spills juice on his blanket, he takes the blanket to the laundromat. When Blanket was done washing, he and Elmo went home. On the way, Elmo meets Zoe. Zoe was sad because she wanted to go to the zoo today, but her dad had to work so he couldn't take her. Elmo decided to cheer her up. When Zoe was happy she saw Elmo's blanket. When Elmo told Zoe to let him take the blanket home, Zoe ripped the blanket. Suddenly Telly Monster roller-skated into Elmo's blanket. Elmo chased Telly around Sesame Street. When they ran into a street light the blanket flew high into the sky. It fell into Oscar the Grouch's hand. He sneezed in it and he tossed the blanket into his trash can. Elmo dived into the can to rescue his blanket. But the two have gone through a door that takes them to Grouchland. There a greedy man named Huxley takes anything in Grouchland. He took Elmo's blanket. But don't worry it will be okay, right? Because you know Elmo will not give up until he gets his blanket back. He asked a kind girl named Grizzy to help Elmo get back his blanket. Grizzy decided she wanted to stop helping because Huxley's house is on the top of Mount Pickanose which is far, far away. Elmo is now on his own. All the people from Sesame Street come to Grouchland to get Elmo back. They went to a police station to help, but the police officer put them in jail and said, "It's against the law to ask for help in Grouchland!"
Elmo went to a tunnel where Huxley's pets trapped Elmo in the tunnel with a trap door. Elmo got out with the help of fire flies. Then he met the Queen of Trash. He left her dump by solving an ultimate challenge. He has to give the queen 100 raspberries in 30 seconds. He finally solved the challenge. Elmo continued walking to Huxley's house. Soon he was attacked by a humongous chicken. Elmo got away. Soon night came and he stopped at a rock to rest.
The Sesame Street muppets and the citizens of grouchland went to Huxley's house to fight for their trash.
A caterpillar woke up Elmo that was sleeping on the rock. He told Elmo to look inside his body. He'll see he will be brave. Soon Elmo got his blanket from Huxley. But Huxley's pets tried to stop Elmo. But the citizens and Sesame Street muppets stopped Huxley. Elmo was happy to get back his blanket. He and the Sesame Street muppets went back to their own town.
