Elton, Derbyshire

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elton is a village in Derbyshire, England and in the Peak District. There are no shops situated in the village but is a small post office, church, school and a cricket field. Its nearest towns are Bakewell and Matlock. It has numerous music festivals and a beer festival during the summer time. Since its elevation is about 900 feet, it isn't sheltered from the wind as well as communities of lower elevation are, and it therefore has a reputation for being cold. The area used to be known for lead mining. An Iron Age fort, Castle Ring, is near the village.

Oliver Millward (a.k.a MENTAL_BASSIST or Jeff Rattix) who is the bassist/vocalist for The Antibodies, guitarist for Malice and vocalist/keyboardist/guitarist for Jeff Rattix and The Spitfire Band, was born at the Royal Hospital in Chesterfield and has lived in Elton all his life. He is still a resident. Matthew Parris lives in the country near Elton.

A frequent bus service is operated by Hulleys of Baslow, route no. 172. This service links Elton and surrounding villages to either Bakewell or Matlock.
