EnCana Corporation is one of the largest independently owned oil and gas companies in the world. First started in 2001, by 2003 and 2004 it was Canada's most profitable company, with approximately $3.5 billion (U.S.) in profits on $12.2 billion in revenue. Its name comes from a combination of the words "Energy", "Canada", and "Alberta". The company was formed in 2002 with the merger of PanCanadian Energy and Alberta Energy Company[2], and is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta.
EnCana is involved in operations in Alberta, northeast British Columbia, the U.S. Rocky Mountains and Nova Scotia. There have also been explorations in Brazil, Oman and Qatar. EnCana also maintains operations in Chad, France and Greenland.[3]
On October 12, 2006, EnCana unveiled plans to build a new 59-story office headquarters building in downtown Calgary, the Bow Building. This proposed building would become Canada's tallest office building outside Toronto.
In January 2007, EnCana sold its share (50%) of a large undeveloped oil field in Chad to the China National Petroleum Corporation.
EnCana purchased the naming rights for an ice surface in the Edgeworth Centre located in Camrose, Alberta, Canada for $500,000. The facility officially opened in September 2007. The EnCana Arena seats 2,000 and is the home arena of the AJHL's Camrose Kodiaks.
