The Encyclopedia of China (Chinese: 中国大百科全书) is the first large-scale encyclopedia in the Chinese language in the modern era. It was published by the namesake publishing house from 1980 to 1993. The compilation began at 1978. It comprises 74 volumes, with more than 80,000 entries. It is arranged by subjects, which number 66 (some subjects occupy more than one volume). Within each subject, entries are arranged by pinyin as in many modern Chinese dictionaries. A CD-ROM versrion, and a charged on-line version are also available. A second and more concised edition of the work is expected to appear from 2007 onwards.
