Epping railway station is on the Northern Line of the CityRail network in Sydney, Australia. It serves the suburb of Epping, a significant commercial and residential area.

Epping is the planned western terminus of the Epping to Chatswood Line and is undergoing reconstruction from 2004 to 2008.

When the Main Northern Line opened on 17 September 1886, a single platform known as Field of Mars was located on the western side of the line opposite Chester Street. The platform was renamed Carlingford on 5 April 1887.

The station was renamed Epping when it opened in its current location on 7 October 1899 as an island platform. The booking office on the footbridge, which will shortly be demolished, was added in 1967 after the original wooden structure was destroyed by fire.

An additional island platform was added in 1928. The original brick building on this platform was demolished in 2006 as part of the station's reconstruction works. The centre terminating road, served by platforms on each side between both island platforms, was intended as part of Dr Bradfield's proposed Epping to St Leonards line. With the conversion of the centre terminating track to a bi-directional main line in 1979, the platform face on the up (platform 1) side was fenced off.

Epping signal box opened on 31 October 1928 and operated the interlocking at Epping until its closure on 12 November 2006. Points at Epping are now controlled from Strathfield signal box. [1]

The upgrade works beginning in 2004 include a new concourse, pedestrian overpasses, wider platforms, and the addition of two underground platforms for the Epping to Chatswood Line. [2] The aboveground upgrades are predicted to be finished in April 2007, although the underground platforms will not be completed until mid-2008. [2]

Epping station is in a cutting between Langston Place and the busy Beecroft Road on two island platforms. Unusually for CityRail stations, Epping's platforms are presently not aligned with each other.

Epping is undergoing major reconstruction as part of the Epping to Chatswood Line construction. The existing unique 1967 concourse with its lifts and stairs will be demolished, and a new concourse is being constructed further down the platform towards Cheltenham.

In addition to this, two new underground platforms are being constructed approximately underneath platform 1. Escalator and lift access to these two new platforms will be from the concourse and the existing above-ground platforms .

Because the station is currently undergoing reconstruction, the terminating track and platform are currently closed.

The station is served by two trains per hour in each direction for most of the day, with additional trains at peak hours. It is also served by an hourly Intercity train to Strathfield and Central and one to Wyong or Newcastle.

The station is normally a terminating station for all-stations trains in the morning peak, but as a temporary measure due to the reconstruction of the station, these trains are terminating at Eastwood station, one stop nearer the city. Additionally, Eastwood is being used as the interchange station for Intercity services, although most services continue to stop at Epping. When the reconstruction is completed, all intercity trains will stop at Epping.

The two island platforms are connected to an overhead concourse with ticketing facilities and ticket gates (the only exit to the station). Easy Access is available via an elevator to the two currently operating platforms inside the paid area. The station can currently be used as a thoroughfare between the two sides of the railway line at Epping, as it connects to a footbridge that spans Beecroft Road.

Because the station is currently undergoing reconstruction, the terminating track and platform is currently closed. To access Platform 3, passengers must use the stairs or elevator for Platform 1, and cross over to the other platform via a specially built walkway about halfway along both platforms. This walkway is flat so wheelchair access is available.

Epping station is a major interchange for bus services for the Northwest region of Sydney, due to its proximity to Epping Road (one of the major bus routes to the Sydney CBD), and the M2 Motorway (which has a special exit ramp leading into the bus interchange). The bus interchange in Cambridge Street is currently undergoing reconstruction as part of the station's upgrade. Stops also exist on Beecroft Road, on the western side.
