The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is an agency of the European Union (EU), located in Stockholm (Solna Municipality), Sweden. The ECDC has been created to help strengthen Europe’s defences against infectious diseases, such as influenza, SARS and HIV/AIDS. The decision to set up the ECDC was taken in March 2004. The inaugural meeting of the Centre’s Management Board was held in Stockholm – the designated seat of the new agency – in September 2004 and in March 2005 Zsuzsanna Jakab took up her post as its Director. ECDC will help the European Union combat communicable diseases and other serious health threats. Its tasks will include running networks of laboratories and operating an early warning and response system. It could, for example, send an EU team of experts to investigate an outbreak of an unknown human disease in a European country.
