European Open (golf)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The European Open is a European Tour golf tournament. It was founded in 1978 and up to 1994 it was played at various courses in England, except in 1979, when it took place at Turnberry in Scotland. Since 1995 it has been played annually at K Club in Straffan, Ireland. It is currently known for sponsorship reasons as the Smurfit European Open. It has become an important tournament on the Tour, and in 2007 the total prize money was £2,400,000, putting it in the leading group of European Tour events outside of the major championships and the three individual World Golf Championships events. In 2007 the European Open returned to The K Club, taking place from 5th to 8th July.
