Feet per second (Or foot per second) is a unit of both speed (scalar) and velocity (vector quantity, e.g. 3ft/s west). It expresses the distance in feet (ft) traveled or displaced, divided by the time in seconds (s, or sec).The equivalent SI unit is the Metre per second.

Abbreviations include ft/s, ft/sec and fps, although the representation ft s-1 is not often used.

1 foot per second is equivalent to:

= 0.3048 metres per second (exactly)
≈ 0.6818 miles per hour (approximately)
= 1.09728 km·h−1 (exactly)

1 metre per second ≈ 3.2808 feet per second (approximately)
1 mile per hour ≈ 1.4667 feet per second (approximately)
1 kilometre per hour ≈ 0.9113 feet per second (approximately)
