Fellow of the Royal Society

Fellow of the Royal Society is an honour accorded to distinguished scientists and a category of membership of the Royal Society. Fellows are entitled to put the letters FRS after their name.

Up to 44 new fellows are elected each year by ballot of the existing fellows. Candidates must be nationals or residents of the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland or Commonwealth countries. Outstanding scientists from elsewhere can be made foreign members. The Society's statutes state that candidates for election must have made "a substantial contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge, including mathematics, engineering science and medical science".
