Fiber tapping
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fiber tapping is a method to eavesdrop the optical signal from the optical fiber. There are different kinds of fiber tapping devices like V-tapper etc. It's quite uncommon to think that fiber tapping is possible. In fact it has been shown that despite common belief it's possible and may lead to disclosure of valuable information (company, bank, etc data).
The only method to detect that someone is tapping the line is by increased attenuation added to that point. There are however tappers which allow to tap the line without attenuation added. In either case there should be a change of scattering pattern in that point in line, which potentially can be detectable. However once the tapper has been detected it may be quite late since a part of information has been already eavesdropped. This leads to the thought that it's possible to construct a device which allows by analyzing the scattering pattern of a particular point in line to recognize that there's a tapping device. The question is how to detect the tapper immediately once it's been put into the fiber.
