FilePlanet is a video game download service, similar to Gamespot DLX and FileFront. FilePlanet was launched, and is run by, GameSpy, which is now a subsidiary of IGN, and is one of the most used video game download sites on the internet. Users can either subscribe for a fee to access high-speed servers or use a free registration to access public servers, which usually have long wait times before downloading. This is in contrast to many of its competitors, who allow access to their free, rate-limited servers without registration and the supply of extensive personal information which this entails. FilePlanet contains many different types of files such as game demos, trailers, and patches. Fileplanet also offers it subscribing members access to closed betas of upcoming and new games. Fileplanet is used by many game developers to host game clients and patches. This is due to the developer being able to gain statistics on what type of gamer is downloading their patches and what other items they have downloaded from the site.
