Finsbury is a place in the south of the London Borough of Islington. The name is first recorded as Vinisbir (1231) and means "manor of a man called Finn."[1]

Finsbury was a division of the Ossulstone hundred of Middlesex. There is a Finsbury Park some miles further north, within the division, but outside the area latterly considered to be Finsbury, which was the core of the former Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury.

The name as a geographical term of reference has partly been superseded in recent years by Clerkenwell and St Luke's. "Finsbury" is used in building names such as Finsbury Tower, the Finsbury Estate and the Finsbury Library and by local newspaper, the Clerkenwell & Finsbury Advertiser. [1]

Finsbury is the home of the Sadler's Wells opera company.
