Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Told from the perspective of a witty border collie lead character, "The Dog". His owner Wal is falling in love with Cheeky Hobson, a hairdresser in their small town of Raupo, New Zealand, and the Dog has romantic entanglements of his own with Cooch's dog, Jess. In addition, Rangi and Pongo must rescue Cooch's prize-winning stag from the clutches of the neighbouring thugs, the Murphys, while Wal tries to gain selection for the All Blacks rugby team.

Featuring songs and music by New Zealand musician Dave Dobbyn, the Footrot Flats soundtrack spawned two hit singles: "You Oughta Be in Love" (featuring Ardijah), and "Slice of Heaven" which was a massive hit in New Zealand and Australia.
