Forrest County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is part of the Hattiesburg, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2000, the population was 72,604. It is named in honor of Confederate General Nathan B. Forrest. Its county seat and largest city is Hattiesburg6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,218 km² (470 sq mi). 1,208 km² (467 sq mi) of it is land and 9 km² (4 sq mi) of it (0.76%) is water.

As of the census² of 2000, there were 72,604 people, 27,183 households, and 17,315 families residing in the county. The population density was 60/km² (156/sq mi). There were 29,913 housing units at an average density of 25/km² (64/sq mi). The racial makeup of the county was 64.34% White, 33.55% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 1.26% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 27,183 households out of which 31.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.60% were married couples living together, 17.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.30% were non-families. 28.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the county the population was spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 18.20% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 18.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 89.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.30 males.
