Franc Cardinal Rode, CM (born 23 September 1934, Rodica near Ljubljana, Slovenia) is a Roman Catholic cardinal, and a Vincentian (member of the Congregation of Priests of the Mission.
He was ordained on June 29, 1960 in Paris. In 1965, at the request of his superiors, returned to Yugoslavia where he worked as vice-pastor; director of studies of his congregation and provincial visitor as well as professor of fundamental theology and missionology at the Theological Faculty of Ljubljana. He worked as a consultor of the Secretariat for Non-Believers in 1978 and was transferred to that dicastery in 1981. He served as its undersecretary in 1982. While at the dicastry he helped organise some significant dialogue sessions with European Marxists. In 1993, the Pope John Paul II united the Pontifical Council for Culture and Pontifical Council for Non-Believers and appointed him secretary of the new Pontifical Council for Culture.
He was appointed as archbishop of Ljubljana on 5 March 1997. He successfully guided the negotitations for a new concordat to final approval in 2004. He was named prefect of the Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life on 11 February 2004.
Pope Benedict XVI created Rode a cardinal in the consistory of 24 March 2006, making him the Cardinal Deacon of the deaconry S. Francesco Saverio alla Garbatella. Until 2006 he served as Pro-Prefect.
