GAA Competitions

GAA Competitions or Gaelic Athletic Association Competitions are competitive events, organised either by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) on its own or in association with other organisations in which Gaelic Games or a set of compromised rules are played.

The following are competitions contested by GAA county teams;

  • Bank of Ireland All-Ireland Football Championship (Sam Maguire Cup) - Most prestigious competition in Gaelic football. Contested by teams selected from all the clubs within a county, which includes the Provincial championships and a qualifier series for teams knocked out of their provincial championship for a second chance to reach the quarter finals.
  • National Football League - Played in spring, Contested by teams selected from all the clubs within a county. Teams are divided into four divisions based on their performances from the previous year, before the top two teams from each division enter a knockout phase.
  • Under 21 Championship - Knockout competition for players under the age of 21 at the start of the year.
  • O'Byrne Cup - Winter competition for Leinster counties
  • Dr McKenna Cup - Winter competition for Ulster counties and University teams
  • Tommy Murphy Cup - secondary competition for teams knocked out of the early rounds of the Senior Championship - played through summer.
  • Owen Treacy Cup - Winners of Tommy Murphy Cup v North American select team

  • Guinness All-Ireland Hurling Championship (Liam McCarthy Cup) - Most prestigious competition in hurling. Contested by teams selected from all the clubs within a county which include the Provincial championships
  • National Hurling League - Played in spring, Contested by teams selected from all the clubs within a county. Teams are divided into four divisions based on their performances from the previous year, before the top two teams from each division enter a knockout phase.
  • Christy Ring Cup - secondary competition for teams not deemed strong enough to adequately challenge for the Senior Championship
  • Nicky Rackard Cup - tertiary competition for teams not deemed strong enough to adequately challenge for the Senior Championship
  • All-Ireland Under 21 Championship - Knockout competition for players under the age of 21 at the start of the year.
  • Kehoe Cup - Winter competition for weaker counties
  • Walsh Cup - Winter hurling competition for Leinster counties plus Down and Antrim.

    • Many counties also have a league structure in place, with clubs divided into divisions.

  • Hogan Cup - All-Ireland competition for provincial school championship winners
