Gaoyao is located on the southern bank of the Xijiang River, just opposite to Zhaoqing City. Both are about 100 km away from Guangzhou, the provincial capital.

Gaoyao was established as a county as early as in the Han Dynasty. It was named after Gaoyao Gorge (now renamed Lingyang Gorge) on the Xijiang River, and became a city at county level in 1993.

Places of interest include the Red Mansion and Gaoyao Xuegong Pavilion.

Gaoyao is closely connected with Zhaoqing City geographically as well as culturally. The two cities are connected by two road bridges and a railway bridge.
