Gary Dempsey (born 15 January 1981 in Wexford) is an Irish footballer currently playing for Football League One Yeovil Town.
The central midfielder made an uneasy start to his Pittodrie career. Although blessed with fine technical ability and good vision, Dempsey struggled with the physical rigours of the SPL in the Aberdeen midfield. Under pressure from a large section of the Don's support, Dempsey travelled to Doncaster to spend a trial with Doncaster Rovers in January 2006. A move failed to materialise, and although Dempsey returned to Aberdeen, his future at the club looked bleak. But as the 2005/2006 season drew to a close, he forced his way back into the first team picture after a number of fine bit-part performances.
Dempsey's undeniable natural ability and work ethic is slowly being matched by his physical ability. In the 2006/2007 season he has looked quicker, stronger and more athletic, and his efforts have been well received by the Aberdeen support.
Contract negotiations have stalled at Pittodrie. Dempsey has expressed a will to stay at Pittodrie, but the club has yet to present a contract offer. Dempsey has already travelled to Yeovil to discuss a potential move. On the 26th of March, Aberdeen announced that he had rejected their final contract offer,[1] and now looks set to sign for Yeovil.
Said after agreeing to play as an amateur for Aberdeen:
"I would rather be on the dole than play for Dunfermline" [2]
