Georg, Duke of Hohenberg

Georg, Duke of Hohenberg was born at Artstetten Castle, Lower Austria, on 25 April 1929. He was the second son of Maximilian, Duke of Hohenberg and Countess Maria von Waldburg zu Wolfegg und Waldsee. He was also a grandson of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and Hungary, Heir Presumptive to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his morganatic wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg.


He was born His Serene Highness Prince Georg von Hohenberg, but on 16 August 1977 on the death of his elder brother, Franz, Duke of Hohenberg, Prince Georg became the 3rd Duke of Hohenberg and Head of the House of Hohenberg. Duke Georg was a diplomat and was appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to several countries with his last appointment being to the Holy See during the pontificate of Pope John Paul II.


On 4 July 1960 Duke Georg married Princess Eleonore von Auersperg-Breunner at Schloss Wald. The couple have three children:

    • HSH Prince Nikolaus von Hohenberg, born Boulogne-sur-Seine 3 July 1961; married Fürstenberg, Westfalen 6 May1989 Countess Marie Elisabeth von Westphalen zu Fürstenberg and have issue.
    • HSH Prince Maximilian von Hohenberg, born Buenos Aires 25 January 1970; married Lucca 9 September 2000 Emilia Oliva Cattaneo Vieti and have issue.
    • HSH Princess Henriette von Hohenberg; born Boulogne-sur-Seine 9 November 1962.
